Annual bluegrass, also known as poa annua, is a short, cool-season grass that is characterized by its leaf tip, which is shaped like the bow of a boat. Grass leaves branch off from a single stem, creating a cluster and bushy appearance. Annual bluegrass is not actually blue. Instead, it varies between a yellowish green to dark green color. The variation in color makes it stand out in a home lawn, especially when the grass itself begins the seeding process. The seeds are often mistaken for a broadleaf weed but, they are actually seed heads that are produced naturally in most grasses.

Annual bluegrass is the most common and widely distributed grassy weed in the world. It grows in dense, low clumps and grows fast in damp, shady areas. When the weather gets hot, this type of grass dies off leaving big, brown empty patches in your lawn.

Annual Bluegrass Control

Vibrant green lawn with trees and landscape in Grand Rapids, MI.

Annual bluegrass can be very difficult to control because it can adapt to a variety of environments. There isn’t an effective selective herbicide capable of killing this grass type alone, without injuring other acceptable grass around it. For that reason we suggest either hand pulling or using a product like “Round Up” to kill the annual bluegrass. Once that is done you can re-seed with a desirable grass type.
